#5. Brett Maher, Kicker

Brett Maher and Cowboys fans have a lot of making up to do. That was evident by the audible groan that was heard across the fanbase the moment it was announced that Dallas had once again acquired Maher’s services.

But who could blame the fans? After all, breakups are hard. And Maher was responsible for plenty of heartbreak during his first tenure in Dallas.

No one can deny that the former CFL kicker has a booming leg. And with kickoffs being more important than ever, his ability to kick it out of the endzone is coveted. Throw in the ability to knock it from 60-plus at the drop of a hat, and it seems like a perfect match.

But then there’s this. During his final season in Dallas back in 2019, he missed two field goals from 30-39 yards out. And he was an embarrassing one of five on field goals between 40-49 yards out.

Maher did play eight games for the New Orleans Saints last year. And was a perfect four of four from 40-49 yards and hit eight of nine field goals between the 30-39 yard marks. But he also missed two extra point attempts.

The Cowboys backed themselves into a corner by not finding better kicking competition this summer and were forced to go with the player that knew rather than some unknown. In the end, Maher could either work his way back into the hearts of the fans or end up costing this team a win or two. Either way, Dallas should be activity searching for an upgrade all season long.
