The fairy tale four-game winning streak for the Dallas Cowboys came to an abrupt end on Sunday night with the team’s 26-17 loss to the undefeated Philadelphia Eagles. The defeat not only handed the Cowboys their first divisional loss, but it also ended speculation about any sort of quarterback controversy in Dallas.
Replacing an injured Dak Prescott, backup quarterback Cooper Rush had been a flawless bus driver under center during the Cowboys’ recent winning streak. Racking up a total of 775 passing yards, four touchdowns, and zero interceptions during his first four games as the starter, there were rumblings that the team might want to stick with Rush as the starter while the wins were piling up. That’s despite Prescott clearly being the better overall player.
But any notion of Rush starting over a healthy Prescott was quickly forgotten following the team’s poor performance on Sunday Night Football. Rush struggled to get the Cowboys’ offense going early, resulting in a 20-3 deficit going into halftime. He’d end the game with his worst stat-line yet, completing just 18 of his 38 passes for 181 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. Rush would post a dismal QB rating of 37.3.
While the loss is disappointing, it does allow Dak Prescott to potentially make his return in Week Seven against the 1-4 Detroit Lions at home in AT&T Stadium without the pressure of replacing an unbeaten passer in the midst of a winning streak. Now, Prescott can return as the savior of the offense instead as the possible villain who ruined the team’s run of wins.
