Cowboys insider: Dallas “has a real problem at wide receiver”

This offseason, the Dallas Cowboys parted ways with two major contributors to their wide receiver corps. The Cowboys traded away four-time Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns for a fifth-round selection in 2022 and swapping sixth rounders. Dallas also lost wide receiver Cedrick Wilson Jr. in free agency to the Miami Dolphins.

The Cowboys addressed those losses by signing free agent wide receiver James Washington and drafting wideout Jalen Tolbert out of South Alabama in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. Yet, neither have had an impact on this season through the first seven games with Washington sidelined with a foot injury and Tolbert being mostly regulated to special teams play.

Instead, it’s been the trio of CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and Noah Brown receiving the bulk of the targets for the wide receiver corps. Unfortunately, all three struggle to gain consistent separation and, at times, have pulled disappearing acts on quarterback Dak Prescott. One team insider, Nick Eatman of DallasCowboys.com, recently discussed the receiver issue in Dallas during a recent episode of the Break podcast via the team’s official website.

“This team, in my opinion, has a real problem at wide receiver. They don’t have any wide receivers that can go make plays that you’re really scared of. I like CeeDee [Lamb], he had a good game. But CeeDee doesn’t dominate the game. He doesn’t. And their going to have a tough decision to make when it comes to re-signing him and all that because he’s not that guy that’s just killing teams. Noah Brown, Michael Gallup; good players and all that. They don’t have a dude at receiver. And I think it’s a problem.”

There’s an argument to be made that this current version of America’s Team, that possesses a top NFL defense and an effective rushing attack doesn’t need a dynamic wide receiver corps beyond players like CeeDee Lamb, Michael Gallup, and a trio of receiving tight ends in Dalton Schultz, Jake Ferguson, and Peyton Hendershot.

Yet, if we are trying to determine the Dallas Cowboys’ top roster needs prior to the NFL’s trade deadline on November 1, a dynamic play-making wide receiver could be near the top of the wish list right alongside a run-stuffing defensive tackle.
