The Dallas Cowboys made Alabama’s Trevon Diggs the 51st selection in the 2020 NFL Draft. And after a promising rookie season, Diggs has become a legitimate contender for NFL Defensive Player of the Year in only his second year in Dallas.
The 23-year old cornerback added to his league-leading interception total against the Washington Football Team on Sunday night in front of a prime-time audience. On only Washington’s second offensive play of the game, Diggs came away with his 11th interception of the season. This time against passer Taylor Heinicke, one of two turnovers the Washington quarterback would toss.
Diggs is on pace to shatter the Cowboys’ previous regular season interception record, which was set by cornerback Everson Walls back in 1981. The NFL’s current record holder for the most picks in a single season is held by Dick “Night Train” Lane with 14 interceptions in 1952.
The young defensive back now has more interceptions in a single season than legendary Dallas defenders like Mel Renfro, Charlie Waters, and Dennis Thurman ever had in a year. And Diggs still has two more games left in the extended regular season to add to those lofty numbers.
